Sketchbook show success!

The sketchbook show came and went. The opening was a blast and a lot of people had positive reviews about our work and sketchbooks. Below are a few images from that night! 

We also hosted a workshop that was sponsored by Stillman & Birn! Genine and I talked about our work, our process and techniques. We shared tools, as well as a few "chilly" sketching moments outdoors. 

Winter Drawing Slam

A local art studio has an annual "drawing slam" where there are 2 models, a ton of food, and 6 hours to sketch/draw/paint your brains out! 

I did a combination of sketching the models and sketching my fellow artists! It was a ton of fun and a great way to meet some other folks!

Fuel 16

My sketching buddy Genine and I wanted a new place to explore and sketch. At the same time an old (as in time past, not age!) advertising friend invited me to an event where copywriters would be sharing stories. It was a launch event for Cohber Press and their FUEL idea. It was a nice night of being an art-geek and catching up with some old friends!

51 seniors in the MTL

What more could you ask for? 12 hours on a bus, 51 seniors, bad food, gorgeous sunshine, crisp fall air, stiff hotel beds, three 1st place finishes in Laser Tag, 7-3 victory in air hockey? 

I was asked to chaperone the senior trip to Montreal in Quebec, Canada this past weekend. We had some free time here and there so I attempted to get some sketches in when I could. Some were rushed due to time constraints, or schedules. Most were finished on site, maybe some details added here or there when I had a moment.

One man Canandaigua Sketch Crawl

Not much else to do on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon so I explored the city I live in with a one man sketch crawl! 

Brrrrrrr sketching

As a meetup group we headed out to the Public Market for some good old fashioned chilly sketching. This, by far, was the coldest day we've had this fall, and we picked an outside venue! 

We wandered around from place to place sketching chickens, coffee shops, and people milling about. At one point Genine got chatting with the owner of Juan and Maria's Empanada Stop food stall. She was sketching his stall and got chatting about creativity. He uses food and sauces for his outlet, we use pen and watercolors! At one point he handed us free empanadas so we could try his sauce! We munched away and I sketched the sauces to remember the moment! It was really cool! Only when sketching will you meet people that way!!

Greenfront Creepin'

If you live in the area, do yourself a favor and head over to the Greenfront and get a burger. They are delish. You might see me in the corner sketching people and stuffing food in my mouth.

Meetin' and Creepin'

The first few days of school are chock full of meetings and more meetings. I cannot sit there and pay attention without doing something. Doodling got me through HS Chemistry and sketching during my meetings gets me though my adult life.

We attempted (long-story) to have a peaceful weekend away in a lakeside cabin. We got some sketching and photography done, but not as much as we wanted. Bummer.

Photographer in the making

My lovely girlfriend recently got some iPhone lenses from PhotoJoJo and she has been on a  mission taking pictures of nature. We recently went on a mini-hike here in Canandaigua--she took pictures, and I sketched. It was a lovely afternoon that ended with iced tea and french fries--YUM.

Downtown afternoon light

With this awesome spring weather, the sun is actually up past 3:30 in the afternoon. So now when I walk around downtown the light and shadows are magnificent! I found a nice park bench on main street, parked it there for an hour or so. 

My watercolor skills haven't been very strong as of late (were they ever?) so I stuck with some gray markers to add my depth. I was on a roll, and then the sun dipped behind a building and put my bench in a cool shadow and I started to get a little frigid. Which is middy silly considering 9 weeks ago it was -9 degrees out here.
